About Dan Forbes

Artist Biography

Growing up in Livingston, Scotland, I was drawn to art from an early age. It became an outlet that allowed me to channel my creativity in a positive and meaningful way, ultimately shaping the direction of my life and career.

In 2011, I began my formal art education at West Lothian College before progressing to Edinburgh College, where I studied for two years. I then moved to England to complete a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at the University of Cumbria, graduating in 2018. Following my degree, I completed a postgraduate qualification in Secondary Education and spent five years teaching Art, Design and Photography.

It was during my time as a teacher that I acquired my first studio and began developing my debut collection of black and white abstract works. The collection marked the beginning of my professional practice, exploring the relationship between simplicity, movement and emotion through bold contrasts and expressive mark-making. I have since moved into a part-time lecturing role at Newcastle College, allowing me to dedicate more time to my own artistic practice as I prepare to launch my second major collection in early 2027.

My work explores profound themes of existentialism and the nature of existence. Working across mixed media—including acrylic, oil, spray paint and experimental techniques—I investigate questions surrounding identity, consciousness, science, nature and what it means to exist. Each piece is intended to encourage contemplation, inviting viewers to form their own personal interpretations and emotional connections.

Characterised by a surreal visual language, my paintings combine high-contrast compositions, expressive textures and energetic movement to create works that are both visually striking and conceptually layered. I am particularly interested in balancing chaos with harmony, allowing each composition to evolve intuitively while remaining grounded in carefully considered form.

My practice is influenced by artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Pablo Picasso and the abstract expressionists, particularly Mark Rothko. Their willingness to challenge convention and communicate universal human experiences continues to inform my own approach, while I strive to develop a visual language that is distinctly my own.

As my practice continues to evolve, I remain committed to creating work that encourages reflection, conversation and curiosity. Through abstraction and symbolism, I hope my paintings offer viewers an opportunity to pause, question and engage with the beauty, complexity and uncertainty of the human experience.
